Q: Can you tell us what inspired your new theme "Objective Correlative"?
A: I wish I could tell you a methodology for developing a theme. The themes choose me, not the other way around.

Q: Where does the inspiration come from?
A: What inspires me has to do with autobiography, but not in its literal sense. My heroine was an adolescent in Paris before I was born and she is more a distillation from the internalized movies that were such a part of my growing up. On Thursday afternoons we were off from school and I spent that time at the movies.

Q: Why the movies? How does that relate to your creations?
A: I admire the visual shorthand of the movies like a tree shedding its leaves or a calendar flipping its pages. it's a visual shorthand to mark the passage of time.

Q: How did this inspire the new Series "Objective Correlative"?
A: It's actually a blending of experiences; two in particular. I have owned for some time a simple three-petal carved flower from opal. I could somehow perceive its unrealized loveliness, the later blossoming contained in its inchoate form, and its eventual travails and downfalls. The second experience is the remembrance of an image of myself in an old album. I can see it so vividly; I am 14, wearing my first grownup clothing, a navy wool suit bought for me with too-long of sleeves. I am newly taller and gawky in that picture, leaning against a tree, both infuriated and wistful. It is the first picture in which I recognize myself.

Q: What does this represent for those viewing your new Series?
A: It represents every girl on the threshold... every young girl who lives in the young woman, in the mature realized adult, in the fifty-year-old shocked at the upcoming birthday and in the slowing-down but 'don't stop me' elder who finds romance the old fasion way,  under a banyan tree in a raging monsoon or in the new age of internet technology.
