"Signs of Civilization" Q & A with Eve

Q: Each of your Series reflects a time in your past. What was the inspiration?
A: The last two Series "Objective Correlative" and "A Winter's Tale" were rooted in my childhood in France. "Signs of Civilization", on the other hand, comes from my classical studies and experiences in field archeology later on. But still, I suspect that growing up during a war and understanding even as a child that we are always in the middle of history made me more aware. I always loved imagining the stories behind the artificats I dug, thinking about their owners' culture, religious beliefs and fears.

Q: Tell us an amusing incident of  your work in field archeology.
A: Working for two months to painstakingly reconstruct a Phoenician jar, sleuthing out the pieces from a huge ancient dump and finding almost all the body of the jar. Then the excavation director comes and smashes my jar – it could not be exhibited, because it was missing the base, and it was missing the rim; probably a maid thousands of years ago broke it and  hid some of the pieces or threw them away!

Q: And another?
A: Like the time I was, as usual, squatting with my tools, brushing the ground and suddenly, someone hit me on the head and pushed me to the side?
Q: Why? What happened?
A: Next thing I know, my partner is stomping furiously in the dust. A scorpion had been rearing its tail... exactly under my rear!

Stay tuned!
