Acanthus Series

“Acanthus” Series Artist Statement:

Squinting through the surveyor’s gauge, he marked it. A lushly foliate form, nature drawn through a needle’s eye, what the new temple of the gods required. The Parthenon already rising on that hill all verticals, and fluted columns requiring only the final gesture: the precise elocution of refined form.

Why of all Attic species flourishing on Hymettus, why choose this horse of a plant, this indelicate Acanthus?

“I have,” he said, “kept the strength, The profound rythm of the soil. The rose, the lily, the olive were no vehicle for the majesty of the stone, and of eternity. Acanthus will remain, and remind us of the glory that was Greece.”
