Interestingly, Eve did the original sandpiper carving in stone, on a slice of blue topaz! (She wanted to learn how small-scale stone carving is done.) It is amazing how she was able to create such wonderful detail in a gemstone with a hardness of 8! (Diamond has a hardness of 10, sapphire is a 9, steel is only about a 5 to 5.5.)
